Hey everyone,
I thought it might be helpful to start chronicling some of my moments of success. Like, times I was able to do (or eat!) something that once seemed impossible.
If you’re new to my blog, I was diagnosed with mast cell activation syndrome in 2018 by a few doctors, including Dr. Maria Castells.
Dr. Castells, and others, told me it was possible for the type of mast cell activation I have to go into remission. It’s called secondary mast cell activation, in that it arises in response to another cause.
Fast forward to 20201 and I’m so much more stable now. I’m not “perfect” and there are things I still deal with, but when I look back at how I used to be, it’s not even a comparison.
So today I wanted to share with you a little epiphany I had the other day:
I’ve been making a point to remember interesting little cooking tips/tricks lately. Like hey, nutmeg is a pretty good spice to put on sweet potatoes.
I was busy looking at my photo, thinking how it wasn’t quite good enough to post, when I flashed back to 2018/2019.. eating sweet potatoes was actually a terrifying experience. It felt like a science experiment…
Sweet potatoes are high-histamine. A few times I’d tried eating them, I did get a bit of a reaction (which I won’t elaborate on for the neural retraining folks).
But my doctor had said the more stable I got, I would probably be able to eat them again, and that it would be okay to experiment. So I did… but it was still scary.
Flash forward to 2021 and here I am, making them as part of my HelloFresh meal kit, and I’m not even thinking abut histamine.
I’m wondering why my photos don’t look as good as other people’s, and whether I should buy a jar of nutmeg.
So, it’s just a reminder of how much things can change, and your situation can actually get better.
I am oddly near tears reading this. So many things falling into place after decades of mysterious events connected with foods (including a sweet potato incident), skepticism from relatives, etc etc. I am in Boston too and just called Dr. Castell’s office last week to get on a waitlist- before discovering your blog. Thank you for sharing your experience, it really helps. My life has been so impacted by this thing for which I am finally finding a name.
